Work / Life Balance and Music

Nicky Romero and Avicii recently (well a little less recently now) released their music video for ‘I Could Be The One’. If you haven’t seen it yet, see below:

In the video a woman who has become fed up with her job is at a critical ‘come to jesus’ moment and feels trapped by the judgements of the society around her. After dreaming of a life free of the stigma, redundancy, and dullness of her current life, she sets out to live the life she has always wanted.

I love this woman’s fierce attitude, but I will agree that kicking sand castles and giving people the bird isn’t really what we should all be aiming for!

Now I won’t try to say this paints a fully accurate portrayal of how to solve work/life balance issues, but it does give a very compelling argument why that balance should be struck. I’m not saying we should all quit our jobs and move to Barbados…but here are a few less caustic things this video may suggest we do:

  • Take some “me time”. It’s important to set aside time to think, to meditate, and to refresh. Just because you can throw yourself headfirst into your job with no breaks doesn’t mean you should. Some simple ways to do this? Go for a walk during your lunch break, plan out a fun date for yourself on the weekend, or maybe treat yourself to something special after a hard assignment!
  • Try new things. Maybe riding a horse down the beach isn’t your thing, but try something new! Take up a new sport, find a new hobby, or maybe even just do something that scares you. No matter what you do, challenge yourself to have a little more fun!
  • Just be ourselves. Part of what makes this video so compelling (besides the fact it is fun to watch) is how the woman is able to finally feel free by expressing her individuality and personality. Always express who you are, and remain genuine! If you are into beaches and horses and dancing the night away, embrace it and make time for yourself to enjoy those things.

Three Songs That Will Fix Your Day

The other day I mentioned how you should keep your head up, hang in there, and stay positive about your outlook on life. Well in case that is proving to be rather difficult, I have some good news for you. Part of how I was able to get through rough patches in my day and life in general was by listening to music. Everyone has their anthem that gets them through the day, and here are three of my personal anthems for when life gets rough.

Get ready to plug into some good music for your day. Image courtesy of Life123.com

Hey all! Apologies for the delay on posts! I was working extra-hard to bring you a video montage recap of Electric Zoo 2012! Check out the images and video below for the full experience. For reference, I was roughly 20 feet from stage!! Footage includes Tiesto, Skrillex, Bingo Players, W&W, Dev, and Sander Van Doorn (also pardon how shaky it was, the crowd was pretty excited). For full streaming of most of the sets, check out enkay’s collection of EZoo streams!

Three Easy Ways To Tweet More Effectively

I’ve been noticing an uptick in different no-nos on Twitter recently, and seen many opportunities for companies, individuals, and groups to maximize their twitter interaction. Now granted, I’m only a college grad and ‘what would I know’ about advanced social media campaigns and social media strategy? Well, as it turns out, I know enough not to do these three things:

Concert Review: Idle Warship

Hey, so apologies in advance, there will be no Viral Monday or Uncommon Verbiage this week. I know you’re probably heartbroken, but we’re going to get through this together.

Update: The surprise guest was Ryan Leslie! I couldn’t hear when they called his name (probs had already blown my eardrums by then) so Talib Kweli was awesome and told me on Twitter!

But on a more exciting note, I saw Idle Warship last night at the Highline Ballroom and fell back in love with them again (or rather, renewed my music dork vows).

Upcoming Misadventures

Hey all!

I figured I’d give you a quick informal weekend update on what to expect next!

As you might have noticed, I added some music to the blog…mainly because I’ve become a bit obsessed with Timeflies ever since I saw them at Princeton Lawnparties (it will make you wish you had tigerblood)

Timeflies, newfound obsession. From left to right: Cal, Rez. Image courtesy of State In The Real.

I will be releasing some new Uncommon Verbiage tonight or tomorrow (I’m trying to pick out the perfect one given that its concert season) as well as doing some research for Viral Monday (Ermagerd seemed to be quite popular).

What else can you look forward to?

Well, I have quite a crazy lineup of concerts coming up. Monday I will be seeing beloved band Idle Warship perform with my besties from college that got me hooked,

and then, I will be attended Saturday and Sunday of unofficial raver’s paradise, Electric Zoo. I would explain more about it, like before, except I feel like the promos speak for themselves:

From there, I am still taking suggestions!

So stay tuned, and get hyped!

Viral Monday: Gangnam Style

Introducing a new segment of City Gopher: Viral Monday!

Every Monday I’m highlighting a viral phenomenon on the internet. It might be amazing, it might be abhorrent, it may even be wild and wacky. This week its:

Hey I Just Met You

…And this is crazy, but here’s my URL, so blogroll me maybe?

Ok but actually, I’ve been noticing that Carly Rae Jepsen may have just concocted the most successfully nerdy-chic pickup line of 2012. Between the memes, spin-offs, parodies, and response videos, “Call Me Maybe” has become a viral international phenomenon. Whether it’s the Harvard Baseball Team or Tay Zonday, some the parody videos have kicked off to as many as  14 million views, people have begun making business cards, and I have even been approached by boys trying to be witty at bars with the famous line (and yes I have even used it as a pickup line in social situations).

We Are All Animals: Electric Zoo!

Hey guys! You may have heard me excitedly posting that I will be attending Electric Zoo this year, but just in case you missed it: IM GOING TO BE AT ELECTRIC ZOO HECK YEA!

Yea, its pretty big. This is a picture taken at Electric Zoo 2010. Image courtesy of D-Series.

To explain briefly what Electric Zoo is, essentially it is one massive music event (concert is not a fully viable word for this magnitude). It features a colossal lineup of big names like Skrillex, 3Lau, Steve Aoki, and David Guetta. I could try to explain how the entire event is one dreamy techno/dubstep-filled atmosphere of joy and exuberance…or you could just watch the trailer:

Thinking you might want to join in on the fun? Here are some things you should do before booking your tickets:

UPDATE: Like A Starstruck Fangirl; Talking to Jane Lui

UPDATE: view the full interview of Jane Lui here!

I swear to god I’ll stay composed throughout this post. Image courtesy of Pacific Ties.

As some of you may know, though most of you may not, I am a huge fan of Jane Lui. Some may know her from her YouTube channel ‘Luiland for Dreamers’, while others may know her from her performance of “History Of Lyrics That Aren’t Lyrics“. Her music is usually unique, artistic, and look as handmade as they sound (she uses everything from kazoo to suitcases for her original sound). Yesterday, I got to interview her.
