Twitter for Beginners: Step 3

And we’re back! Welcome to step three of your basic guide to Twitter. Today I will be explaining how to use basic functions on Twitter such as ‘favoriting’ and ‘retweeting’. Let’s begin:

Overview

On twitter you will encounter a set of functions available to all twitter users: the favorite, the retweet (or RT), and reply. There are other options available, but these three will be your primary focus going forward. Replying to a tweet is as straight forward as it sounds.

Let’s look at how to reply to a tweet:

So here I have clicked the ‘reply’ button and chosen to commend Michelle Mangen on this cool infographic. So what I’m going to do is type in my response and hit enter.

This is the result. This will not show up as part of a ‘conversation’ on twitter. It is publicly viewable, and can be interacted with by followers of both users, and by the general public.

Now, on to retweeting: to ‘retweet’ or share a tweet with your followers/the public, you will need to select the ‘retweet’ button. This should be the result:

Once you have chosen to retweet an article, this should be the result:

Another option you have is to ‘favorite’ a tweet. This ‘favorite’ will not be viewable to the general public, but will alert the user that you liked their tweet. This is a great function if you want to politely and discretely liked something without drowning your followers in replies and retweets. To favorite something, simply click the ‘favorite’ button. The result will look like this:

Now that you know how to retweet, reply, and favorite tweets, your homework is to find up to 5 tweets you like, and retweet and favorite them. If you really like it, send the user a polite reply.

Resume Revisions

Hello again! Again, apologies for delayed postings (they will be back to normal soon I PROMISE!). So having spent most of my days analyzing my resume I’ve discovered three things that absolutely do NOT belong. As you may remember, I wrote previously about the necessary interview kit. A resume is a very crucial piece of this kit, and is often the only lasting impression a company will have. This is why your resume should be concise, clean, and expertly crafted…and shouldn’t have these three things:

  1. Interests/Hobbies. If you have a passion for music, art, design, etc. leave this for the interview. Often expression the things you are passionate about are best left for face-to-face interactions and much of the context of these interests is lost on a resume. It’s perfectly fine that you love EDM, rap, or classical piano…but its not going to compel anyone to hire you on paper.
  2. High School. Essentially, unless you have 0 work experience, are applying to college, or haven’t got much else going on  don’t include your high school. Most people aren’t going to care all that much that you went to a prep school, or that you were an AP student. Besides, your recruiter (if they are clever and genuinely interested) can find that on your LinkedIn.
  3. Your GPA. Now I say this gingerly, as this can become more useful in certain contexts. Now, if you have a 3.5 or higher, are applying to a heavily math/science based job, or are top of your class, listing your GPA might be in your favor. However, if your GPA is any lower than that, you are applying for an entry-level job, or you are applying to a field in which more heavily favors hands-on experience your GPA will be little more than decoration. If someone is still interested in your GPA, by all means tell them about it. Typically, however, your GPA is only necessary for college applications and graduate programs.

You may have noticed ‘your picture’ was not listed as a thing that should not be on your resume. The reason for this is, certain countries do require pictures on resumes are standard practice. In incidences where you are applying to jobs overseas, research whether or not your picture is needed. However, on American job listings, leave your picture for your LinkedIn profile, and keep it professional.

Where Are The Women?

Recently, TechCrunch’s David McClure challenged women everywhere to “put your money where your mouth is”, NASDAQ’s Paul Goodwin posited the question, “who are better investors, women or men?”, and Forbes’ Geri Stengel informed us that women were “smart investments” in all senses of the word.

The Glass Cyber-Ceiling

Though the ‘glass ceiling’ may appear to have shattered, it would seem there is still a digital variant present.

In a recent CBS article, it was noted that despite recent changes among large tech companies and women stepping to the forefront, there are still many women in tech facing major challenges. Weighing in on the situation regarding Marissa Mayer, Kara Swisher at AllThingsD commented comments that someone close to the action said,

“She was pretty much voted off the island, even though she was critical to its earliest successes.”

In other fields, women in tech have faced stereotypes that have led to incorrect assumptions: that women can’t code, women aren’t effective bosses, and that women are only fit to be ‘fluffy’ bloggers. All have been disproved through success stories such as Girl Develop It (coding), new insight on female bosses, and hard-hitting topical blogs that keep up with those of men. Sometimes described as a ‘boys club’, tech has long been an assumed space of 20-something geeky men. In some cases, investors are often slow to accept the idea that the CTO of a new company might be female, or that female-founded tech companies can bring just as much heat as male-founded ones. However, with programs such as Women Innovate Mobile, and a new boom in diverse tech companies stepping into the forefront, perhaps we will witness as the glass cyber ceiling shatter in the wake of success of female founders.
