Goucher’s Finest: Meet Judy Lewent

For any Goucher grads that aren’t familiar with Judy Lewent, go do yourself a favor and enter her name into a Google search. The other day I was lucky enough to meet with Judy and hear more about her amazing career trajectory, as well as gain insight into where her Goucher education took her in life.

As a recent grad, the prospect of ‘leaving the bubble’ of Goucher was horrifying. However when talking to Ms. Lewent, the prospect of living on my own, pursuing a solid career, and ‘transcending my personal boundaries’ (sorry that pun just isn’t going to die) did not seem so scary.

For those unfamiliar with Ms. Lewent, she graduated from Goucher College in 1970 and went on to the MIT Sloan School of Management in 1972.   Her career began as an analyst with financial institutions until she began working with Pfizer in 1976. In 1980, she began working with Merck, eventually rising to CFO in 1990 (becoming the first female CFO to serve at a major corporate institution). Currently, she sits on the board of Thermo Fisher Scientific IncMotorola Solutions Inc , on the board of GlaxoSmithKline since 2011, and is a trustee of the Rockefeller Family Trust. Since 2009, Judy has served on the Boards of Purdue Pharma Inc., Napp Pharmaceutical Holdings Limited and certain Mundipharma International Limited companies as a Non-Executive Director.  Additionally, she is also serves as a life member of the MIT Corporation, as well as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences., and remains an awe-inspiring force to be reckoned with.

The fact that a little ‘city gopher’ like me had the opportunity to pick the brain of one of Goucher’s finest graduates is incredible, and I only hope other city gophers may share the honor.
